In San Diego, California, many people attribute hearing loss, ringing in the ears, and unexplained dizziness to the natural signs of aging. However, for some individuals like Julie Sifford, these symptoms turned out to be indicators of a life-changing condition – acoustic neuromas, a rare but potentially serious issue.
Julie and her daughter Eliza share a close bond, engaging in various activities together. But when Julie began experiencing lightheadedness and dizziness, their routine became more challenging.
"I had some tinnitus, the ringing in my ear, which really started increasing over time. I also noticed some hearing loss in my left ear and just assumed it was a part of normal aging," Julie recalls.
Upon undergoing an MRI, the diagnosis revealed an acoustic neuroma – a small, non-cancerous tumor, about the size of a raisin, pressing on the main nerve connecting Julie's ear to her brain.
Describing the condition, Dr. Rick Friedman, a Neurotologist and Director of the UC San Diego Health Acoustic Neuroma Program, explains, "It's like the covering of the wire that's just growing out of control, and it damages hearing. It can get big enough to compress the brainstem."
Dr. Friedman, along with neurosurgeon Mark Schwartz, specializes in the removal of these tumors. The crucial aspect of the procedure is to eliminate the tumor while preserving hearing and avoiding damage to facial nerves.
Julie expresses relief, stating, "I knew, immediately, that I had preserved my hearing." While she won't regain any lost hearing, she feels fortunate that it won't deteriorate further. Her balance is improving, and she eagerly anticipates the upcoming soccer season.
Acoustic neuromas result from the overproduction of Schwann cells in the nervous system. Depending on the tumor's size, patients have three options – monitoring for growth, radiation, and surgery. Surgery stands out as the only option guaranteeing no further hearing loss.
